My Winning Strategy
In choosing my investment strategy, I opted to go for a buy and hold approach on stocks that I thought had the widest range of possible stock price outcomes in this short time period, but that also fit the competition guidelines. With the least amount of diversification possible, I bought Gene Therapy stocks with upcoming catalysts after the first leg down in the market, in late October of 2018. In late February of 2019, I was able to profitably close out my positions after M&A activity had picked up in the industry.
My Winning Strategy
At the beginning of the challenge, my risk aversion was nonexistent. I allocated my funds to equities that were under scrutiny and had the potential for large payoffs. The result, as one may expect, were some very profitable trades and some not so profitable trades. The most lucrative trade I made was on Pacific Gas and Energy (NYSE:PCG), where my position nearly doubled in value due to a favourable court ruling absolving the firm of liability involving a 2017 California wildfire. After this trade, I became more risk-averse. I began to shift my portfolio into lower beta equities across multiple sectors, while still participating in the tail end of the equity and gold rally. Some of the most profitable trades involved TSX:KL (30%), TSX:K (20%), TSX:HEXO (20%), and TSX:TGOD (18%). This challenge gave me incredible first-hand experience developing trading strategies and using the IRESS trading platform. It was an honour to participate in the challenge and help raise funds for such an important cause.
